Staff Review:
Rob Thomas’s first solo album “Some thing to be” is more mainstream pop than the post-grunge alt-rock we expect from Matchbox Twenty. Although showing glimpses of the Matchbox Twenty sound, this album does have its own style to it. “Lonely No More”, the first single has almost a Justin Timberlake feel to it and is definitely the poppiest song on the album. Every track on the album just sits in the back of your head after hearing it a few times.
John Mayer also features on the track "Streetcorner Symphony,". With John Mayer’s guitar brilliance and Rob’s vocal, it really sets the benchmark.
SOMETHING TO BE," the eagerly anticipated debut solo album from 'Matchbox Twenty' songwriter/vocalist Rob Thomas. The set was produced by Matt Serletic and mixed by Jimmy Douglass and David Thoener, with recording in New York City, Los Angeles, and Ossining, New York.
Making special guest appearances on "...SOMETHING TO BE" are John Mayer (guitar on "Streetcorner Symphony"), Robert Randolph (lap steel guitar on "I Am An Illusion"), and guitarists Mike Campbell (Tom Petty's Heartbreakers), Wendy Melvoin (Wendy & Lisa), and Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow). The rhythm section throughout the album features bass guitarist Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) and drummer Gerald Hayward (Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé). The core band is rounded out by producer Matt Serletic, who plays keyboards on all the tracks.
One of the most distinctive vocalists and accomplished songwriters in contemporary music, Thomas has earned a string of accolades - both for his work as lead singer and primary composer with matchbox twenty as well as for his collaborations with other artists. In June 2004, the Songwriters Hall of Fame presented Thomas with its first-ever "Starlight Award" - created to recognize a songwriter in the early years of his or her career who is already making a lasting impact. He has earned 13 BMI Awards, including both songwriter and song of the year, and he was named Billboard's Songwriter of the Year two years in a row.
Thomas has penned a remarkable string of chart-topping hits, including matchbox twenty's "Push," "3AM," "If You're Gone," "Bent," "Real World," "Back 2 Good," "Mad Season," "Disease," "Unwell," and "Bright Lights." In the process, matchbox has earned the distinction of having had more #1 hits and spending more weeks at #1 on both the national Modern AC and Adult Top 40 charts than any other artist in history.
Thomas' smash collaboration with Santana, "Smooth," earned Thomas three Grammy Awards. He has also worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Marc Anthony, and Bernie Taupin. Combining all of his projects, Thomas has contributed to sales of some 75 million records.
