Having left one of the most successful boybands of all time it would be easy to think that Brian McFadden might have ‘done’ a Kym Marsh and launched into a disastrous attempt at a solo pop career. Our Bri is a different breed however, and his debut solo album ‘Irish Son’ is full of the kind of anthemic pop songs that Ronan Keating so successfully navigated after his Boyzone departure. Couple that with a new improved ‘scruffy-indie’ image and the tabloid friendly love split and you have all the makings of a future megastar.

The album kicks off with the two singles ‘Irish Son’ and ‘Real To Me’, two very personal accounts of the McFadden life that build to majestic climaxes. ‘Demons’ follows with its gentle piano, fragile vocal and heartfelt lyrical content quickly followed by the county-ish jaunt ‘Lose Lose Situation’. Elsewhere, the obviously painful to sing, ‘Sorry Love Daddy’ and the ironic ‘Be True To Your Woman’ offer further treats before the closing ‘Walking Into Walls’ and ‘Almost Here’ (a duet with Delta Goodrem) bring the album to a fabulous close.

‘Irish Son’ is a fantastic statement of intent from the former Westlife man offering enough proof that he could surpass the successes of his former band mates. Personal, emotionally charged and full of cracking tunes, ‘Irish Son’ is one of the pop albums of the year.
