Product Description

The first original album since 2000 from modern rock superheroes Green Day, American Idiot is one of the most anticipated and controversial albums of the year.

Musically aggressive and lyrically ambitious, American Idiot is a snapshot of American culture. Part victim of circumstance and part victim of political climate, American Idiot follows Jesus of Suburbia through his confusion, alienation and disillusionment, while fueling that "rocking out in front of a mirror when you're 15" energy Green Day are famous for. Hailed as a "punk rock opera", the new album steers the band in a new direction, carrying a political theme throughout.

Green Day's Masterpiece at it's Idiotic Best

Ok I will confess! I probably am the greatest Green Day fan that has ever lived. Not the most fanatical I confess- however the feverous rampage that I made on Brisbane city music stores yesterday the 19th of October would put many tattoo clad fans to shame.

In spite of this, I will attempt to give an unbiased account of their latest release ‘American Idiot’ (insert ‘oxymoron’ gag here). In spite of the discomfort I experienced from their last release (the critically acclaimed ‘Warning’ album) it felt the vivacious energy of the band had been abandoned for meaningful lyrics and winding melodies. Something was missing, and the CD soon fell out of my rotation.

‘American Idiot’ sees a return to the biting, savage sound ‘Green Day’ pioneered with their earlier albums, however the naďve, teenage lyrics of ‘Dookie’ have been replaced with craftier alternatives. This is courtesy of the album concept (a pop-punk opera) as well as lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s growing distaste with current American Politics. The first single released of the album (also called ‘American Idiot’) is clearly evidence of this.

The album tells the story of a character called ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ and his journey from a broken home to the city. It investigates themes of love, politics, and individual perseverance. Rising from the heights of the character’s life, to the harsh heart-wrenching depths, Green Day’s seasonal music rolls in and out with the tide. From the savage ‘St Jimmy’ and ‘She’s a Rebel’ to the wonderful flowing, sing-out-loud ‘Are we the waiting’ it soon becomes apparent that this is no novelty, this is a masterpiece.

With the schizophrenic nature of each song complimenting the lyrical nature exquisitely the album flows wonderfully. The sound is revolutionary in relation to previous Green Day albums. Sonically Billie Joe’s vocals are appropriately droll at times, soothing and flowing at others and inspiring the rest of the time. They suit the ever growing musical talents of bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool wonderfully.

In a time when those of us who enjoy punk laden melodies are increasingly left to purchase the same album over and over, it is refreshing to have something different. Whether ‘American Idiot’ will live alongside the ‘White Album’ or ‘Nevermind’ is yet to be known, however (in my eyes at least) this album is equally as ambitious and successful. This album is a true masterpiece for lovers (or haters) of Green Day, and connoisseurs of quality music alike. BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!!!!!!!

A band that keeps getting better!

Green Day fans have waited a while for a new release, but this album doesn't disappoint and was certainly worth the wait. For those who have only heard the single American Idiot, this song is not a true indication of the rest of the album. The "punk rock opera" that Green Day present pushes new boundaries, and the lyrics of the album are politically challenging. The songs are catchy but that doesn't mean you will quickly tire of them. Green Day prove they can still rock as hard and as skilfully as any other bands, and this album returns to their earlier style as heard on Nimrod and Dookie. I recommend it to any Green day fan, plus any one else, because this album might convert a few new fans.
