Product Description

The hugely anticipated, new installment in the ground-breaking Grand Theft Auto series is set to arrive in 2008.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the next chapter of the award-winning Grand Theft Auto franchise from Rockstar Games, and it will be coming to the Xbox 360 on day one. In addition to online multiplayer, a first for the series, gamers will experience hours of additional gameplay with two downloadable episodes exclusively available on Xbox LIVE following the release of the game.

Focused on the story of Eastern European immigrant Niko Bellic, Grand Theft Auto IV takes players back to Liberty City and promises a cinematic story told like only Rockstar can, a vast and detailed world to explore, and gameplay like the series has never seen before.

GTA evolved

My first contact with GTA IV once I got it into my 360 was running around a corner after the first cutscene, pushing a random guy in the street, punching him in the face, and being being beaten into submission by the passers-by. I thought: "you ripper!" and proceeded to play the game for the next five hours uninterrupted.

This most recent version of GTA is a streamlined, gritty, realistic viewpoint of guys starting in the gutter, and generally moving up the foodchain. The main protagonist is Niko, a foreigner with a shortage of friends and an even shorter fuse.

Lets break it down:
As you move around the city you regularly receive missions from the different characters you are introduced to as the story progresses. Predominantly this happens via your mobile phone. Alternatively, you can abandon the main misson storyline and wander about at random, picking fights, hijacking cars, and generally making mischief.

This is fun for a while, and you do find some random missions and characters that you can complete independent of the main storyline, but I always found myself drawn into the story of Niko and Roman.

The "American Dream" aspect of the game provides Niko with the reasons and excuses for some of his more violent actions in the game, and the way he handles situations is always for the best of his cousin.

I'm in a dilemma of how to explain the feeling the game portrays. It's mainly loneliness and yearning. It's quite a disturbing effect, interspersed with bouts of frantic violence and car chases.

In terms of basics, the graphics are excellent, the gameplay is superb, the dialogue is probably some of the most natural I've heard (yes, there's a lot of swearing, but if you're against it, don't buy the game), and the learning curve isn't too steep.

My only true gripe is the auto-aim and car combat. I find it a little tricky to find a happy balance, but I guess they have to have something to improve on, or else they couldn't make a GTA V.

The Rockstar team have outdone themselves with this one, and it'll be a while before another game takes over from this on my XBox360. If I could give a more specific rating, it'd be 90/100
