Best Movie of the Year!

America, and the whole world, is at an endless war on drugs. And while Soderbergh's superb movie doesn't provide an answer to the problem, it sure does give a hard hitting look at the underbelly of the problem, the people involved and shocking truth of the people it effects.

Three distinct different stories unfold during the course of the movie and while all stories are linked by the central theme, it is so uniquely structured that no scenarios ever cross over to another.

While there are no hints as to how to cure the trafficking and usage issues it shows, screenwriter Stephen Gaghan has certainly studied his subject very carefully. The movie not only covers many aspects of the drug world, but also goes into great detail in explaining and showing as it is. Because of this, many of the scenes in Traffic are almost unwatchable and it's these scenes that really bring the truth of the situation out.

Of course the movie also has star power, with Hollywoods big guns taking out not only the lead roles, but also the minor roles and cameos as well. It should also be mentioned that the only actor to win an Oscar for this is the superb film was Benicio Del Toro for the amazing portrayal of Javier. But the whole cast put every ounce of emotion, strength and quality into their roles every minute of their screen time.

Also, in addition to Del Toro’s win for Traffic in the Best Supporting Actor category, it also nabbed Best Director for Soderbergh, Best Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay for Stephen Gaghan.

So, after all this, are there any mistakes or flaws in the movie? Clearly not. The entire length of the movie, an astounding 2 1/2 hours, is chock a block full of more than enough visually impactful images that will shock anyone viewing it.

The only flaw is with the DVD itself and that there is very little in the way of extra features. There is a trailer, but the lack of director and cast commentary, deleted scenes or production notes is a let down considering that there would be so much background info that would be interesting to see.

But the movie is still a masterpiece without this, bringing to life this very seriousness of the situation without having to go in yourself and get your hands dirty. Amazing, breathtakingly convincing, a remarkable piece of cinema; whatever you want call it, Traffic is easily one of the best movies of the year and simply has to be seen and owned by anyone with a DVD player. Buy it now.
