Phantastic Phantom

This is entertainment in the old style, not the painful realism which plagues us in so many recent films. It is just a colourful 2 hour escape from reality.

Put aside any prejudice you may have against Joel Schumaker or Andrew Lloyd Webber. No, the music is not appropriate to the time period, but this is "Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera" and is of the "rock opera" genre. It requires a suspension of disbelief. The acting is acting, not acting like you're not acting acting, but acting.

All of the principles were effective in this movie: Minnie Driver as the pampered diva was very entertaining; Patrick Wilson as the contrasting hero to the tragic, alluring Phantom (he has a wonderful voice); Miranda Richardson as Madame Giry; Ciaran Hinds and all the rest of the supporting cast fulfilled their roles to the utmost.

With Emmy Rossum portraying Chhristine Daae as young, innocent and sorrowfully bereft of her beloved father, you are not tempted to slap her down for her pathetic naivete. This would not have been as convincing with a prima donna Sarah Brightman. And her voice! It is all sweetness, but doesn't lack grit when it is necessary. Rossum portrayed the role with a disconcerting maturity for a 16/17 year old.

Gerard Butler - the Phantom man. Granted, his face was not really all that hideous, in fact I know many a girl who would happily have taken him, disfigurement and all with no qualms. He doesn't sing like Michael Crawford or Rob Guest, but his voice, combined with his superb expression is sufficient for the dark and tortured Phantom. Butler makes you feel sympathy for the Phantom. Joel Schumaker wished to emphasize the Phantom's seductive draw for Christine and so chose an attractive Phantom. He chose well.

The main disappointment being that the chandelier doesn't appear to fall on your own head as it does if you have good seats in the theatre production, Schumaker didn't do too badly with this film. Not too bad at all.

See the Phantom if you want entertaining. Don't see it if you are looking for social commentary or historical (or literary) accuracy. Every film has its place and this one won a place with me. Warning: You will NEVER get the songs out of your head!
