Walt Disney Studios have done it again
In the last few years, Walt Disney Studios has been churning out consistently watchable family movies and Eight Below is no exception.
The story revolves around Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) who trains and looks after a team of 8 huskies at an Antarctic research base.
He is called upon to guide research scientist Davis Maclaren (Bruce Greenwood) to a remote location in search of meteorite pieces.
Conditions for the snowmobiles are too hazardous due to thin ice and rough terrain so Jerry and Davis take the dogs on a week long journey.
From here on the action begins with all manner of elements to combat on the journey back to base. Not naming names, but someone is injured and this, along with a severe storm, results in the entire base crew being evacuated leaving the dogs behind to fend for themselves until another crew can return.
All does not go to plan and the early onset of winter means that no more crews can get to the base until the following Spring.
The rest of the film alternates between Jerry's life back in civilization, the rekindling of a relationship with an old flame who works as a shuttle pilot to the research base, his determination to return to the Antarctic to be reunited with his dogs and most of all - the amazing 6 month survival of the huskies which at times is heartwrenching, but always watchable - with a perfect blend of action, awe inspiring scenery and heartfelt pity.
The dogs are as much the stars of this movie as any human and the film always keeps a nice balance between the working dogs and the working people and the special bonds between them.
You cannot find better family entertainment than this and the transfer to Blu Ray disc is truly amazing with crystal clear images of the antarctic landscape and every whisker on the dog's noses. The sound is also a treat with plent of subwoofer action in the exciting storm scenes and cracking of polar ice.
