When a criminal plot is in place to take down the entire computer and technological structure that supports the economy of the United States (and the world), its up to a decidedly old school hero, police detective John McClane, to take down the conspiracy, aided by a young computer hacker Matt Farrell.

Analogue hero on a digital format
When Die Hard 4.0 was released into theatres in Summer 2007, many were skeptical as to whether an aging John McClane would still make for a good film that was better, or at least on par with, the previous three blockbuster installments of the Die Hard series. Thankfully, the answer is a resounding 'yippie kai-yay' as Die Hard 4.0 turned out to be one of the most entertaining and successful films released during the year - and the Blu-Ray makes the perfect showcase for it!
Appropriately, this Blu-Ray release is just like the film: slick, action-packed and loud enough to get your neighbours to complain. As this is a new release of a new film on a new format, the source material is clean as a whistle and it shows. Every pore or wrinkle on Bruce Willis' face is right up there on the screen in full high-definition glory. Every exploding car or flying punch lands with a 'whomp' in a DTS-HD track that will give your surround sound system a full workout. Simply put, this is one of the best presentations - visually and aurally - of a live-action film on the Blu-Ray format to date.
The special features included on the disc are nothing particularly great to ring home about, though. You've got your standard promotional 'featurettes' and a nifty but pointless rock music video (yes, you read that right) about John McClane's exploits in all four Die Hard films.
What's more notable about this disc, however, is what's NOT there, as opposed to what is. As this film was intended to attract a younger audience than the previous installments, producers decided to tone down the blood, violence and language in order to secure a lower rating. For the standard-definition DVD, a new extended cut with all the edited footage put back in.
Thus, what's missing from this Blu-Ray version is that extended cut - all we get is the theatrical cut. It's a mystery why that version was neglected on high-definition, but having rented it out on DVD and watched it, I can assure you that you haven't missed a thing. A lot of the swearing and blood was basically tacked onto the existing film. The added blood is all CGI and the foul language was simply re-recorded dialogue. For me, the much-hyped extended-cut served only to reaffirm how great a film Die Hard 4.0 originally was in the first place. Yet, not including it is inexcusable and thus this Blu-Ray release is only getting 4 stars instead of 5.
Nevertheless, Die Hard 4.0 on Blu-Ray is an ideal example of a popcorn film as it stands, and something great to show off your home theatre with.
