Ben Hur and Lewis Wallace

Ben Hur came out in 1959 and won 11 out of the 12 Academy Awards it was nominated for. It was based upon a book written by an American Civil War General by the name of Lewis Wallace. He wrote the book in 1899.

Charlton Heston stars in the movie. It is a story of love, suffering, the struggle of good against evil, and finally of triumph.

Judah Ben-Hur, the stories hero, grows up with his friend Messala. Judah is a Jew and Messala a Gentile. Judah is the heir of a great and wealthy house in Jerusalem. Messala is a promising military man who trained in Rome as a soldier and then returned to Jerusalem as the leader of the Roman occupation forces.

During a parade a brick falls from the roof of Judah Ben-Hur's house narrowly missing the new Roman ruler. Judah is falsely arrested and sent to Rome as a slave on a Roman military ship.

Messala knew what had happened was an accident. He could have prevented Judah's arrest, yet because of his lust for power he did nothing.

In addition, Judah's mother and sister are imprisoned in Jerusalem. Judah now hates Messala. While in the belly of the ship Judah vows to live and return to Jerusalem to free his mother and sister. Slaves in such ships rarely lived more than a year. Judah had been rowing off and on for three years when in the heat of a battle the ship he is on sinks.

He saves the commander of the ship and as a reward he is given his freedom. He is adopted by the commander who was the leading naval officer of the Roman navy.

Judah Ben-Hur returns to Jerusalem with all the wealth and power of his new identity. He confronts the astonished Messala who assumed he was dead. Ben Hur demanded that Messala find and release his mother and sister from prison. Messala finds them in prison but they have leprosy. Messala sends them out of Jerusalem to live out their time in a pitiful existence within a leper colony.

Ben-Hur is told they are dead. His hate for Messala grows. In a chariot race featuring Ben Hur and Messala, Messala is killed. In his dying breath, out of spite, Messala tells Ben-Hur the truth about his mother. Judah Ben-Hur's hate no longer has an object to focus on. He generalises his hatred. He becomes a bitter shell of his former self.

Finally in desperation he goes to the leper colony to get his mother and sister. He takes them to Jesus, this great preacher who had been performing miracles. When they get to Jerusalem they discover that He has just been crucified. Now, all hope is gone. Despair settles on them.

In the hours ahead earthquakes rock the city. Judah's mother and sister are then healed of their leprosy. Judah's heart along with his mothers and sisters are turned to Jesus. Their faith, health and lives are restored.

I tell you the story of Ben Hur because I want to tell you the rest of the story. When Lewis Wallace the author of Ben-Hur set out to study the life of Christ he was not a Christian. Writing a story like Ben Hur was the farthest thing from his mind. Wallace was antagonistic toward Christianity. He was determined to study the life of Christ thoroughly and write so convincingly that he would kill the story of Christ once and for all.

He wanted to prove that Jesus, as He had lived, was not God but merely a man; that He never rose from the dead and that Christianity was a hoax. He studied and studied. His subject drew him further and further into his research until the evidence overwhelmed him. He dropped to his knees and cried out to Jesus to be his Saviour and Lord.

And then instead of writing a book to prove to the world that Jesus was not God, he wrote Ben Hur to prove to the world that Jesus was God.
